About
Step back to 1895 and experience cave exploration as it was first undertaken by Édouard-Alfred Martel, the pioneer of modern speleology. On this immersive candlelight tour of the Marble Arch Caves, electric lighting is switched off to recreate the natural darkness Martel faced during the first recorded scientific exploration of the cave system over 130 years ago.
Guided by lanterns and candlelight, you will accompany Martel on a dramatic re-enactment of his underground journey, assisting with his discoveries while hearing the fascinating stories and methods behind his work. Learn how he measured cave passages with rope, calculated depths, illuminated vast chambers, traced water flow through dry passages, and opened new routes for future explorers, despite the limited equipment of his time.
The experience is led by Sean Corrigan, long-serving Operations Officer at the Marble Arch Caves, whose deep knowledge and engaging storytelling bring Martel's achievements vividly to life. This unique tour offers a rare chance to connect with the history, science, and adventure of early cave exploration in an unforgettable setting.
