Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) – What You Need to Know
A new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has been introduced by the UK government. This will apply to visitors who do not require a visa to enter the UK, including Northern Ireland, and to those arriving into Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland.
What is an ETA?
An ETA is a digital travel permit linked to your passport that gives you permission to travel to the UK. It is not a visa and does not change the UK’s current entry requirements. The ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Everyone, including children and infants, must have a valid ETA before travelling.
Important: British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA.
Who Needs an ETA?
You will need to apply for an ETA if:
You do not need an ETA if you:
-
Hold a British or Irish passport
-
Already have permission to live, work, or study in the UK
-
Have a valid UK visa
-
Hold a British Overseas Territories passport
When Will I Need an ETA?
Travellers from certain countries will need to apply for an ETA before visiting the UK, including Northern Ireland. More nationalities will be added to the scheme in due course. If your country is not yet eligible for an ETA, please check if you require a visa using the UK Government’s visa checker tool.
How Much Does an ETA Cost?
From 9th April 2025, an ETA will cost £16 per person. It covers multiple trips to the UK (including Northern Ireland) within a two-year period. If your passport changes during that time, you’ll need to reapply.
Do I Need an ETA for the Republic of Ireland?
No, the ETA is only required for entry into the UK, which includes Northern Ireland. You do not need one to travel solely within the Republic of Ireland.
How to Apply
You can apply for an ETA online at GOV.UK or by using the official UK ETA App available via the App Store or Google Play.
While you must apply before travelling, you are permitted to travel while your application is being processed. Most decisions are made within 3 working days, although it can take longer if further checks are required. You will be notified by email once a decision has been made.
Please be aware that holding an ETA does not guarantee entry into the UK. You may still be subject to checks at the border.
Stay Scam-Aware
Apply only through the official UK Government website or app to avoid fraudulent websites. Be cautious of third-party sites charging unnecessary fees or collecting personal information.
