Enniskillen Workhouse EHOD 2025

About

Enniskillen Workhouse reopened its doors December 2022 after an extensive restoration project securing the past, the present and the history of this historic landmark building.

This workhouse was one of the most important buildings in the town. Ordinarily, the value of a building is determined by its architecture; but there was nothing unique about its design. Instead, what make Enniskillen workhouse so important is the people who walked through its doors, their stories, their lives and often their deaths. As the only survivor of the former Enniskillen Union Workhouse the entrance block represents this hugely importance building in terms of the socio-economic history of not only the town of Enniskillen but the county of Fermanagh. The building presents an excellent, well-preserved example of early Victorian Tudoresque architecture, and retains much of its original appearance and character.

The workhouse was built, like many others, in the early 1840s and designed by workhouse architect George Wilkinson. The Entrance Block is well proportioned and is an impressive building despite the loss of the remainder of the workhouse buildings. The importance of such workhouses relates not only to the architectural heritage of the buildings but also to the social legacy of these institutions. The fabric of the building, its architecture, materials, design and function are only part of the story. The lives of those people who worked or lived in any building tell a far greater tale. The workhouse building also acts as a visual reminder of how society viewed and treated those with financial problems, mental health issues, unmarried mothers and their children.

Workhouses in Northern Ireland are now becoming increasingly rare with many demolished or substantially altered. Of the 161 workhouses designed by Wilkinson in Ireland throughout the 32 counties, few remain intact, 53 workhouses have been demolished. Come to Enniskillen Workhouse for unique guided tour, an insight into the restoration of building and the restoration of its place on the landscape in Enniskillen.

One guided tour on Saturday morning, 30 people max. Workhouse open 10-4pm on Friday, self-guided tour
