Join Lisnaskea Historical Society for a captivating evening as we present the final talk of our 2024 season: The Ulster Canal & The Men Who Built It, delivered by Nuala Reilly, Archivist with Waterways Ireland.
This illustrated talk will delve into the remarkable story of the original Ulster Canal — a major 19th-century infrastructure project that once linked Lough Neagh to Lough Erne. Nuala will shine a light on the forgotten men who made this feat of engineering possible: the labourers and navvies who toiled with pick and shovel to cut through bog, rock and countryside, building the canal by sheer hard work and endurance.
The talk is especially timely and of local relevance, as public interest grows in the canal's revival. A newly restored 1km stretch at Clones was recently reopened, and significant reconstruction is now underway between Clones and Lough Erne at Wattlebridge. This talk offers a unique opportunity to reflect on both the historic and contemporary significance of the Ulster Canal in our region.
Come along and discover the people, politics and purpose behind this ambitious waterway, and connect with a vital piece of local and national heritage.
