About
Lisnaskea Historical Society is delighted to welcome Simon Wiggins for our February talk, which will tell the extraordinary story of Monica de Wichfeld (née Massy-Beresford), a courageous Fermanagh woman whose life took her from the shores of Lough Erne to the heart of the European resistance during the Second World War.
Born and raised at St Hubert's on the shores of Lough Erne, Monica carried her Fermanagh roots with her far beyond home. During WWII, she became actively involved in the Danish Resistance, showing remarkable bravery, resilience, and determination at great personal risk. Her wartime experiences mark her out as a true local heroine and an inspiring example of quiet courage in the face of oppression.
In this talk, Simon Wiggins will bring Monica's story vividly to life, exploring her upbringing in Fermanagh, her role within the Danish Resistance, and the wider historical context of her actions during one of the darkest periods in European history. It is a powerful story of local connections, international conflict, and individual courage.
This promises to be a fascinating and popular evening, appealing to anyone with an interest in local history, wartime experiences, and the remarkable lives shaped by global events.
Please arrive early to secure your seat. Members and visitors are very welcome. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
