About
Lisnaskea Historical Society is delighted to welcome Seamas Mac Annaidh back for the first talk of 2026! Join us on Tuesday, 20th January at 7:30pm in the Castle Park Centre for an evening dedicated to one of Ulster's most fascinating characters, Robert Arthur Wilson, better known to history and readers as Barney Maglone.
Seamas will take us on a journey through the life of this witty and fearless journalist, poet, and humorist. Known for his comic "Letters to my Cousin in America" and his humorous columns in the Impartial Reporter, Wilson was far more than just a clever pen name. He was a passionate advocate for ordinary people, using his sharp mind and keen observations to defend tenant farmers in Donegal, challenge landlord injustices, and give voice to communities often ignored by the press.
From his early days writing under a variety of pen names to his time as editor of several influential newspapers (including the Impartial Reporter), Wilson lived a life full of colour, drama, and adventure – including surviving a near-fatal balloon accident! His writings combined humour, insight, and a heartfelt celebration of local life, earning him the affection and respect of readers across Ulster.
Entrance £5 – includes refreshments after the talk
Support local history and hear the stories of a man whose pen captured the spirit, struggles, and humour of his time.
Everyone welcome!
