Join Carlo Gébler, Denzil McDaniel and David Barker in exploring the political and social heritage of Fermanagh through conflict and the peace process to the present day via books written by Carlo Gébler, The Glass Curtain (published 1991) and A Cold Eye: Notes from a shared island 1989-2024 (published 2024) with photographs by David Barker , and a documentary film (‘The Impartial Reporter’) directed by Carlo Gébler and produced and filmed by David Barker, one of a series of 6 x 30 minute films: Plain Tales from Northern Ireland (BBC 1993). Book clubs and other readers are invited to read both of these books with a view to engaging in a facilitated discussion with Carlo Gébler and Denzil McDaniel.
Carlo Gebler has written 2 books about rural life in NI at a time of conflict centred on Co. Fermanagh - The Glass Curtain , and A Cold Eye: Notes from a Shared Island 1989-2024.
Denzil McDaniel worked at The Impartial Reporter for 40 years, first as a columnist and then as editor for 27 years. He has published a book, Enniskillen: The Remembrance Day Bombing .
David Barker, a retired independent film maker and photographer whose credits as cameraman include Inside the Maze (1990) and Edge of the Union (1985) with Martin McGuinness and Gregory Campbell , will talk about the films he produced and photographed about the Fermanagh Community at the time The Glass Curtain was published - Plain Tales from Northern Ireland ; one of the films in the series, ’The Impartial Reporter’ will be screened.
